The King of Korean Ramyun

The king of Korean Ramyun. You’ll see the ramen cake is in a decent round shape as though Nongshim Shin Ramyun had accepted I was prepared to utilize one of my moment ramen pots to cook it! That was agreeable. You’ll likewise see that these are not your common noodles, but rather more extensive. This assortment is known as Udon. They’re generally somewhat chewier too in moment noodle introduction. There are two parcels incorporated into this bundle: got dried out vegetables and soup base. Good! How about we get it on! I sufficiently utilized water to bring about the UdonRead More

US Ambassador to South Korea Attacked

Mark Lippert, U.S. ambassador to Korea, was attacked by a man with a knife in Seoul Thursday morning. The assailant, Kim Ki-jong, attacked Lippert as he was sitting at a table during a breakfast lecture hosted by the Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation at the Sejong Center. Kim slashed the right side of Lippert’s face opening a five-centimeter gash while shouting that South and North Korea must be unified and the military training to prepare for war must halt. Kim shouted “Oppose the war” and “For the unification of South and North Korea” as he was taken away inRead More

A Sign Of The Times

…or TDC Mickey D’s While certainly not the height of culture, a McDonald’s opening in Dongducheon is certainly a sign things are changing. The city has grown a great deal in the last 20 years, particularly with the arrival of the subway and the construction of “New Town” aka Jihueng-Dong. Yes, Dongducheon has finally arrived, for better of worse. This construction site sprung up recently, with little fanfare, on MSR 3 near Jihueng Station. Actually, it’s surprising it took so long. Neighboring Pocheon has two McDonald’s and Uijeongbu has at least two or three, among other American/international franchises. Local conventional wisdom is: itRead More

Total Eclipse Begins In Seoul On October 8th at 7:27 PM

Residents of Korea will be treated to an eclipse in the early evening tonight. An eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the shadow cast by the Earth.  Usually, the Moon misses this shadow, but a few times a year it passes directly through the shadow, causing the Moon to appear anywhere from brick red to copper to dark gray. The light beams into Earth’s shadow, filling it with a coppery glow that colors the moon red. Additionally, recent volcanic activity also could contribute to a darker and redder moon. The eclipse is the second in a rare series known asRead More

NORTH KOREAN COUP? Has Kim Jong Un lost control?

There is some media buzz about Kim Jong Uns sister taking control and the North Korean capital being on lock down. It is hard to say from the outside what is transpiring in the secretive state. Of course these types of events are always worrisome but life continues as normal in the south. Of course, if true, this is a major news event. Meanwhile I just checked the TV and FOXNEWS, CNN, and the BBC are droning on about the ebola issue. Never mind that 1 million people a year die from malaria. Not news. No panic.  How contagious isRead More

Korean Drivers Are Bad But There May Be Worse

Korean drivers are notoriously bad but I can tell you from firsthand experience that Russian drivers are at a completely different level. I do have a theory. Korean drivers do not know any better but while Russian drivers know better, they just do not care! The sheer size of the country, combined with lax, and often corrupt, law enforcement, and a legal system that rarely favors firsthand accounts of traffic accidents has made dash cams all but a requirement for motorists. “You can get into your car without your pants on, but never get into a car without a dashRead More

Will Sinkholes Sink Lotte World Tower?

When it’s finished in 2016, the Lotte World Tower will reach more than 1,800 feet. But unfortunately, crews are encountering some problems as they near the top: Small sinkholes are forming in the neighborhood, and a nearby lake is mysteriously emptying into… hopefully not the base of the world’s sixth tallest building.

Where’s The Beef?

Ah North Korea. They try so hard but never seem to quite “get it.” While this is certainly the saddest excuse for a hamburger I have ever seen, it certainly must be better than the average citizens meal, such as rock and twig soup, or worse. The country of North Korea might not be too fond of the United States, but that doesn’t stop its citizens from wanting to try American cuisine. Recently, intrepid traveler Bobthewraith posted these sad photos on Reddit that show what counts as a hamburger according to the state-owned, national flag carrier airline of North Korea, Air Koryo.Read More

LTG: About Last Night

We all have both unique and shared (and uniquely shared) experiences living in Korea. So, I had my typical Friday night of darts at Dolce Vita although somewhat atypically I managed a first place finish.  My nephew Justin came by the bar for a couple of beers and then we headed out to the samgyapsal joint I favor. As is our normal practice the conversation soon turned to politics. And when I start getting wound up my voice gets somewhat intense.  Not shouting really, just kind of aggressive.  I was in this mode when the waitress came to our tableRead More
